What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a painful bony bump that is located at the base of the big toe. Bunions are caused when extra pressure is put on the big toe consistently or over several years. Walking can become more painful, the bigger the bunion becomes, and your foot’s structure will physically change. Severe bunions angle over the second toe, causing the other toes to crowd each other and also become misaligned.

Conservative Options

The quickest solution to relieving the pain from bunions is to buy supportive shoes with a wide toe box. Other options include padding, custom orthotics, pain-relieving medicine, Physical Therapy and more.

Surgical Options

Surgical options should be considered when patient are experiencing severe pain, having difficulty finding/wearing shoes, or have overlapping toes. Each patient, and in fact each bunion is unique so whether or not surgery (and which type of surgery is best) is recommended can only happen after a visit to one of our Podiatrists!

MIS Options

Minimally Invasive Surgery, or Bunionplasty is an advanced, minimally invasive bunion correction surgery that realigns the bones of the foot while preserving soft tissue. Unlike traditional bunion surgery, which often involves large incisions and extended recovery times, bunionplasty uses small incisions and specialized techniques to reduce trauma to the foot.
